Clean Steam Generator for Sterilization: Steam-to-Steam Process and System Design

Clean Steam Generator for Sterilization: Steam-to-Steam Process and System Design

A steam-to-steam clean steam generator allows facilities with an existing industrial steam supply to produce dedicated steam for sterilization equipment. Plant steam supplies the heat, while appropriately treated feedwater evaporates in a separate clean circuit.

NOBETH designs clean steam systems around the required steam output, operating pressure, feedwater quality and sterilizer demand. This arrangement can support hospitals, laboratories and medical device manufacturing facilities seeking greater control over their sterilization steam supply.

A typical system has two separate fluid circuits connected through a heat-transfer surface:

  • Heating circuit: Plant steam → steam control valve → heat exchanger primary side → condensate trap → plant condensate return.
  • Clean steam circuit: Specified feedwater → feedwater pump → clean-side evaporation chamber → steam separation → sterilization equipment.

The industrial steam condenses on the primary side and releases heat through the exchanger wall. On the secondary side, the feedwater absorbs that heat and boils, producing the clean steam supplied to the process.

The following functions are central to system operation.

  1. Industrial steam supply and heat input

The primary steam line includes isolation, straining, pressure conditioning where required, and a modulating control valve. Available steam pressure and flow must be assessed under peak operating demand.

The primary-side condensing temperature must provide sufficient temperature difference for secondary-side evaporation. Heat exchanger selection therefore considers the required duty, feedwater temperature, operating pressures and pressure losses through the supply system.

  2. Feedwater supply and secondary evaporation

Feedwater treatment is selected according to the incoming water analysis and the specified steam and condensate quality. Reverse osmosis or additional purification stages can be incorporated where the application requires them.

A feedwater pump supplies the evaporation chamber. Level measurement and feedwater control maintain the required operating inventory. Feedwater preheating and degassing can also be evaluated when non-condensable gas control forms part of the project specification.

  3. Steam separation and delivery

Steam separation reduces entrained water droplets before the steam enters the distribution line. The installation may also include sanitary pressure-control equipment, particulate filtration, sampling connections and condensate drainage.

Pipe sizing, insulation, routing and drainage influence the conditions delivered to the sterilizer. Capacity selection should therefore account for simultaneous equipment operation, cycle demand and distribution losses.

  4. Pressure and water-level control

A typical control arrangement uses clean-side pressure feedback to regulate the primary steam control valve. As steam demand changes, the controller adjusts heat input to support the required clean steam pressure.

A separate level-control loop manages feedwater supply through the pump or inlet valve. Alarm limits, protective interlocks and valve failure responses are defined in the control specification.

  5. Primary condensate removal

Condensate formed on the heating side passes through a suitable trapping arrangement into the plant condensate return system. Trap selection considers startup duty, operating load and return-line backpressure.

Where available differential pressure may become insufficient during modulation, condensate removal requires additional engineering assessment. Clean-side drainage is managed separately according to its quality and process requirements.

For projects requiring hygienic construction, NOBETH can configure feedwater-, steam- and condensate-contact components in SS316L stainless steel. Material scope, internal surface treatment, welding requirements, hygienic connections and drainage provisions should be clearly identified in the technical agreement. Explore the available NOBETH 316L clean steam generator configurations.

Sterilization applications also require assessment of steam dryness, non-condensable gases and superheat against the sterilizer’s requirements. Steam generation, distribution, chamber operation and process verification form parts of the complete sterilization system.
